Female Hormone Profile. Test

Oestradiol is a steroid hormone and is the main form of oestrogen found in women. Oestradiol plays a key role in the reproductive, cardiovascular and bone health of females. In athletes where energy output can exceed dietary input (a condition known as RED-S), oestradiol can be decreased due to low LH and FSH and this has an impact on bone density, soft tissue and neurological function increasing the risk of injury. 

Lutenising hormone (LH) plays an important role in the functions of both the ovaries and the testes. In athletes where energy output may exceed dietary intake, the regulation of LH can become suppressed which can lead to disrupted menstrution in women and low testosterone in men. It can also lead to decreased bone density and an increased risk of injury. As LH levels in women rise and fall throughout the menstrual cycle it is important that the test is taken at the correct time. 

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinising hormone (LH) regulate the functions of the reproductive system. FSH & LH help to regulate oestradiol in women and testosterone in men.  Levels of all these hormones can become decreased if the body is not receiving enough nutritional energy.  This can lead to adverse health and performance consequences including decreased bone density and disturbed menstruation in women.
